2013 Challenge Quilt

Like I really need another quilt project. Our guilds challenge this year is to make a miniature quilt using the 8 fabrics you received, and no blocks larger than 6".  At least 12 fabrics must be used (not a problem I have over 20 picked and have to eliminate some) and at least two techniques. Here is a picture of my fabrics.  Everyone got some combination of  8 of 20 different fabrics and cuts of 6 1/2" inches wide down to 2 1/2".  Every bag is different.

Okay, diffidently not my usual color pallet or fabric choices.  My first idea was add more teal and fine a fabric with most of these colors.

My thinking was use the stripe and add the orange stripe to it for sashing between the blocks.  Now that my quilt is planned I chose wilder colors and am not going to use these.  Here is a picture of my sashing color.

Really! This one!  No I haven't gone crazy. I decided to make matryoshka dolls, Russian nesting dolls. I and going to sash the blocks with this orange and some kona black.  The dolls will be on a white on white paisley design.  Each doll or set will be of a wide variety of colors.

I have designed my faces and will print them on fabric.  I have 5 sizes chosen for the dolls right now.  I have an array of white block sizes cut out and a few dolls fused and ready for applique.

Wild Goose Chase

My Wild Goose Chase quilt was finished and arrived at the Berea Quilt Extravaganza on time.  It is part of the "Flying Things Challenge"  The challenge fabric is the navy blue in the sky. Here is a picture of it and another  of my quilts in the exhibit, Greener Pastures.  Now Wild Goose Chase is being exhibited at the Berea Hospital.  Fabric used are mostly batiks.  Wings are made of my own walnut dyed fabriks and batiks.  Wings are quilted, are not flat against the quilt.  One foot extends forward our of quilt.

Beach Quilt

I am still working on the beach quilt challenge.  I thought I just had 2 people left to make, but my daughter decided the space needed filled in more and so I have 11 to make.   Here is a picture of the entire quilt so far.  The white slips are where more people will be added.  Click here to see the gallery of close-ups of people.

Beach Challenge

I have made some of the children for the beach challenge.  A lot of the clothes are made of the challenge fabric.  The fabric was fused to wool felt and stitched with invisible thread with freemotion zigzag.  I am slowly adding thread stitching got hair.  Hre are some samples of what the challenge looks like now.  My favorite item is the volleyball net.[gallery]

Beach - challenge Fabric

Here is the challenge fabric I am working with for my beach scene. I have decide to attach most of the people and trees to wool felt with free motion zigzag and invisible thread. I had never quilted through wool felt before. It is wonderful. I put all my wool felt in the washer in hot water squeezed out a lot of the dye, drained the washer and washed all but the cream in a hot wash on gentle. Then threw them in the dryer. The felt comes out all bubbly, but Irons perfect. I think I'm hooked.
