3 Day Dog Quilts - Dog 2 Thread painting

I finally found time to sew today and finished the pug.  There is always a stage where you think that it all looks bad, and too much thread has been used.  This is when I keep going and add some more. Here 's a look at the thread I chose to paint the pug.  The following are some pictures of the dog in various stages of being thread painted.

Fabric Dog Stage

Here are some pictures of the process of adding the fabric to my canvas sketch.  I free hand cut all the fabric, added each piece and then choose and cut another piece.  I think the blue and purple under the black thread painted layer will help add dimension.


To hold everything together until covered with thread painting I use a bit of elmers washable school glue and freemotion zig zag stitch with invisible thread.

Sketching

Here is Dog 2  - such a cute little pug.  I will need to narrow the black section on his face a bit.  The camera angle really distorts the face on the drawn picture.   The sketch on cloth will be where I make the changes before adding the scrap color layer.  

  

Lola Jenkins

Yesterday I was privileged to b able to take a class with Lola Jenkins.  She is a talented artist and teacher.  She spoke Saturday at our Quilter's Day Out in Lexington, KY.  Then Sunday and Monday she offered two of her classes.  Lola is a vey interesting, funny and motivational speaker.  If you have a chance to take one of her classes, I highly recommend it.  She is also offering some of her thread art classes online at Craftsy.

Luna moth

My latest work has been to thread paint a luna moth.  for the book journal back ground I used some of my walnut dyed fabric with some additional brown ink.  Then I lay a piece of fusible on it stitched it in all directions.  Next I held an iron over it and it shrink up wit gathers.  I used thread painting and re-purposed denim for the rest.

I also made a Christmas journal and several color pencil holders.

Humming Bird & Leaves

Last week I worked on thread painting a humming bird.    I just put the feed-dogs down and stitch with the open toe embroidery foot.  It is a lot like coloring with pencil except you use a needle and thread. Here is a picture of the Humming bird journal I made for a friend.

I enjoyed it so much I decided to thread paint the autumn leaves I have found. Here are the first ones I did to day for a wall hanging.  I have about 8 left to sew.  I am using invisible thread for the bobbin so i don't have to change it every time i switch colors.
